If you’re looking for a cat backpack to use specifically for plane travels where you don’t want to bring both a carrier and backpack, the Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier should be on your list. It is a basic backpack that reasonably priced, but most importantly, you don’t have to worry about the backpack not fitting in the cabin space. Sherpa has a Guaranteed On Board program, which basically states that as long as your airline is on their list, if you are denied boarding due to the carrier size, Sherpa will refund you the price of the carrier PLUS the price of the flight you missed.

Please note that Sherpa has an updated version with a slightly different pocket shape. The main part of the backpack appears to be the same. The one that is included in this review is the one with the rectangular pocket (left picture).

What I liked
I purchased this backpack for the purpose of travelling with my cat, by plane. I wanted a backpack to use when I arrived at the destination, but I wanted a carrier to use for the plane travel.
- Flexible shape. The main advantage of this backpack is how flexible the sides are, which means I was able to slightly compress the backpack to fit in small spaces under the seat on the plane.
- Top opening. This is based on personal preference, but I find that backpacks that are top opening make it easier for cats to go inside.
- Carrier mode. I liked being able to have the carrier on my side so that the cat has more space as they are inside for longer periods of time. I also liked being able to carry the carrier on my side so I can see how my cat is doing.
- Foldable shape. I like that this backpack is able to fold mostly flat for storage, when not in use.
- Backpack comfort. I found this backpack to be relatively comfortable with no major complaints. It also appears to be quite comfortable for the cat inside, as my cat does not hesitate to go inside.

What I did not like
The main downside of this 2-in-1 backpack carrier is that it doesn’t do either function as well as regular backpacks and carriers. For this reason, I do not use this as my everyday cat backpack, as there are better options out there.
- Flexible shape means floppy backpack. If your cat is the type who likes to sit on top of the backpack, or hang out the sides, this backpack will be too floppy as it does not hold its shape.
- Carrier comfort (minor complaint). I found the carrier mode to be fairly uncomfortable, but most side carriers are, because of my cat’s weight and having to carry him on one side.
- Insufficient storage space (minor complaint). One of my main priorities is being able to carry a water bottle, and this backpack does not have any bottle holders. It has two zippered pockets, which is helpful, but not the best.
- Strap attachment is slightly confusing (minor complaint). The first time using this backpack will be confusing because it doesn’t look like the straps can attach to the backpack. But there are some online videos showing how to attach it, so once you figure that out, its not a real problem.

Overall Thoughts
I would recommend this backpack to someone who prioritizes flexibility of the having a backpack and carrier all in one. If you are someone who travels by plane often and don’t want to have a separate carrier and backpack, then this backpack will be perfect for you. If you worry about backpacks not fitting within the airline dimensions, then this backpack is perfect.
I also think this is one of the more comfortable backpacks on the market to carry on your back. If your cat is on the smaller side and prefers staying inside the backpack rather than hanging out the sides or sitting on top, then this backpack will be a great choice!
On the other hand, I would not recommend this backpack to anyone is looking for a more rigid backpack. It will not support a cat sitting on top of it. I would also not recommend this to larger cats, as the size is on the smaller side.
